| Marty Smith has been an endurance athlete for over 30 years and now shares his experience and passion with his athletes as a Fitness Coordinator and Personal Trainer for the U.S. Army in Stuttgart Germany. Marty began his endurance career with the “Golden Spike” Marathon in 1976 as a NROTC Midshipman at the University of Utah and has since compiled an impressive endurance athlete resume. As an active-duty Naval Officer, Marty enjoyed the challenge of keeping in shape during 15 years of sea duty, including five submarine assignments and culminating in a three-year tour as a Nuclear Submarine Commanding Officer. Currently living in Stuttgart, Germany, Marty has started a second career, which combines his passion for multi- and endurance sports with teaching/coaching others. Marty’s athletic resume includes being selected for the 1999 Navy Ironman Kona Team, completing ten Ironman triathlons and seven Xterra Off-Road Triathlon World Championships, and has over 10 age-group triathlon first place finishes. He has a 2:40 marathon PR, a 10:57 Ironman triathlon PR at the age of 51, and is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the organizer and winner of the World’s longest organized underwater Half- marathon run (accomplished on a Trident submarine on patrol!). Marty is a good example of "age is not a limiter" as he set a PR for the Half-Ironman at the age of 50 last year, finishing the Clearwater , Florida 70.3 World Championship race in a time of 4:46, 12th in his age group! Marty has taught as an assistant college professor at a major university and is a USAT Triathlon Level I coach as well as an A.C.E. certified Personal Trainer. He is also certified as a triathlon bike fitter through the Dan Empfield F.I.S.T. institute. He has a wide background of knowledge regarding multi-sports training and racing, and enjoys using this knowledge to help the new or experienced athlete progress to the next level with focused, efficient, and knowledgable training, equipment, and nutrition. Marty understands the demands placed on a multi-sports athlete because of a military career and family life, and uses the latest in exercise physiology and coaching techniques to achieve and go beyond one’s athletic goals. Theresa Michal has been successful in a wide range of endeavors. She was an NCAA Division I All-American diver at the U.S. Naval Academy. As an active-duty Naval Officer, she has served in a variety of assignments around the world, including Virginia, San Diego, Japan, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Currently stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, Theresa is enjoying traveling around Europe as well as skiing, learning German, and of course training and racing in a variety of triathlons, road and mountain bike and running races. She also enjoys her "second" job as a Spinning Instructor and Personal Trainer for the U.S. Army. Theresa specializes in coaching swimming, coming from a strong high school swimming career and demonstrated excellence in competitive open water swimming. Since starting her first triathlon in 1999, she has become a world class military age-group triathlete! Her multi-sport achievements include being selected for the 2001 and 2003 Navy Ironman Team, being a member of the U.S. Armed Forces 2004 Triathlon CISM World Championship team, completing nine Ironman triathlons, and over 20 age- group and overall triathlon first place finishes. Her European race experience includes the 2004 Military World Championship Triathlon in Belfort France, a 2nd place age group finish at the 2005 Kraigchau Long Course Triathlon, the 2001 Ironman Austria, and the 2005 Quelle Roth Ironman. In off-road triathlon, she has competed in the Xterra World Championship in Maui Hawaii, and in open-water swimming she was the Hawaii 2004“North Shore Series” open water champion in her age group. She was also a 2004 USAT “Honorable Mention” All-American. She is also an experienced weight lifter and has completed the Navy’s Physical Readiness test with the maximum score possible for the last ten years! There have been three constants throughout Theresa’s life: a passion for physical fitness, a sincere love of teaching and helping others achieve goals, and a desire to experience life to the fullest. Theresa brings this wide range of skills and experiences to her coaching: "I see myself as a teacher and mentor, rather than a traditional coach. I’ve learned that triathlon is just not a sport but a lifestyle, and I’d like to help others gain from my experience.” Theresa also knows the challenges which face women starting the sport of triathlon or other endurance sport. She has a wide base of knowledge concerning woman-specific triathlon equipment, clothing, and nutrition, as well as helping swimmers to a new level of speed and comfort.
